인도 동부 석탄광산 붕괴로 인한 사망자가 11명으로 늘어났다고 AFP통신이 31일(현지시간) 보도했다.
사고가 발생한지 이틀이 지났지만 수색작업이 여전히 진행중이라 희생자가 더 나올 수도 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
29일 밤 인도 동부 고다주 자르한드에 위치한 노천광이 무너져 최소 23명의 광부가 고립됐다. 차량 수십대도 함께 매몰됐다.
현지 경찰 대변인은 “수색 작전이 중단되지 않았다”며 “11명이 숨진 것으로 확인되지만 시신 1~2구가 아직 잔해 밑에 있을 수도 있다”고 말했다.
사고 직후 광부 15~16명은 무사히 대피했지만 사고가 난 곳이 외딴 지역인데다 지형이 험준하고 안개까지 짙어 구조작업에 난항을 겪고 있다고 대변인은 전했다.
구조작업은 31일 밤께 마무리될 것으로 예상된다.
해당 광산은 정부 소유의 석탄회사에서 운영하는 곳으로 인부들은 모두 민간 하청업체 소속이다.
탄광의 붕괴원인은 확인되지 않았으며 당국은 자세한 사고경위를 조사중이다.
Rescue workers have recovered the bodies of 16 miners buried after 23 miners were trapped by a mound of fallen earth in eastern India, police said Saturday.
R.K. Malik, the police spokesman for the state of Jharkhand, where the mine was located, said that hopes of finding any survivors among the remaining seven miners still missing were slipping.
The collapse happened late Thursday, but heavy smog prevented rescue workers from entering the open coal mine in Godda district until early Friday morning.
Godda is around 1,570 kilometers (975 miles) southeast of New Delhi.
The coal mine is owned by the state government, but is leased to a private contractor.
Jharkhand is one of India’s poorest states, but has some of the largest mineral deposits in the country.
